While the prospect of liquorice might conjure memories of chipped teenage nails from sordid nights past, today it’s infinitely chicer – so much so, that models walked the Chanel spring/summer 2021 runway wearing the vampy shade.

The trick, of course, is to ensure it’s immaculately finished, with a neat, well-hydrated nail bed, smooth rounded shape, and a high-shine top coat. For fashion illustrator Aishika Xaviera, it’s all about a low-key short, dark nail, rather than extreme talons – the nail should be understated, to allow the dark polish to make a statement.

Here, check out close ups of how celebrities are wearing black nail polish to get inspiration for your own DIY manicure, plus the black nail polishes to use to copy the looks.
